Feature Article - A Stitch In Time Could Save You Nine
You have heard of the saying, “a stitch in time could save you nine” which simply encourages us to avoid procrastination in dealing with a task/issue or else we will end up with a bigger task/issue than before. “But how does this tie in with emotional wellbeing?”, you might ask. Well read on…
I’m sure both you and I can think back to different times in our lives when “a stitch in time” could have saved us “nine!” For doing so could have saved us a lot of hassle and even improved our health, finances, relationships, career, etc….if only we dealt with it sooner. Think of the mounting unpaid bill(s) you ignored, that has now ruined your credit. Consider the savings account or pension scheme you promised to sign up for years ago. What of the course/qualifications you kept putting off which is now affecting your job prospects. Catch my drift?
Well, the same principle goes for our emotional and mental well-being. When we keep putting off dealing our emotional baggage, it ends up affecting various aspects of our lives. They underpin our attitudes, beliefs and behaviours which means you may find yourself making poor choices and bad decisions. More importantly, if you are keen on succeeding, this is an area you simply can't afford to overlook as this will impact the results you yield. Moreover, you end up expending more energy to get what you want.
So is now the time to set healthier boundaries before you really get hurt? Do you need to confront someone before you lash out at them (or others) in fury? Is now the time to consider getting help regarding your self-defeating or self-destructive behaviours (e.g. addictions to food, alcohol, spending, etc)? Are you carrying negative emotions and mindsets that are hindering you from moving on with your life (e.g. fear, anger, bitterness, low self-esteem, etc)? If so, it pays to keep the old saying in mind and deal with your issues pronto or be prepared to face the BIGGER consequences that WILL end up costing you a lot more.
